How does insulin function?

1 min read

The pancreas is an organ in the body that is responsible for producing the hormone known as insulin. Insulin is a hormone that assists the body in converting glucose, or blood sugar, into usable energy. Additionally, it assists the body in storing it in the muscles, fat cells, and liver for later usage when the body has a requirement for it.
After you eat, there is a spike in the amount of glucose in your blood. Your pancreas will secrete insulin into the bloodstream in response to this rise in glucose because it has been triggered. Insulin travels to the cells of your body from the pancreas via the bloodstream. It sends out signals to the cells, telling them to open up so glucose can enter. When the glucose reaches the interior of the cell, the cells either turn it into energy or store it for later use.
If you don't have enough insulin, your body won't be able to use glucose for fuel or store it. Instead, glucose continues to circulate throughout your circulation.
